We were approached to create a brand identity from scratch, with coffee packaging and ultimately an online selling platform in mind. The model of sharing profits, known by Big Rock Coffee as ShareTrade, with farmers and small producers made them an ideal partner for us at CHD.

A compelling origin story
We created an identity for Big Rock that was based on the mountain called El Peñol in Nicaragua where the coffee is based
We wanted to capture the basic shape of the mountain that could be used throughout the visual identity of the company
We tried a wide variety of different options, before settling on a logo that was versatile enough to be used in many different forms, both with the wordmark and without.
After creating a brand that was sleek, minimal and focussed on the rock that the farmers get their livelihoods from, the next step was to translate that into packaging.
For any company packaging is hugely important, but even more so for a coffee company that relies heavily on first impressions that customers will have when seeing the packaging amongst other competing brands. Coffee design is pretty challenging! We wanted to replicate the very minimal design we had created for the brand identity, and did so by opting for black packaging with either black, or clear, stickers depending on the run.
We created a simple HTML static website to tell the story of Big Rock Coffee, ShareTrade, ethics in the coffee industry, and sustainability.
